Inconsolable since the death of his wife, the banker Rene Duchesne (Jean Gabin) is about to put an end to his days when Suzanne (Mireille Darc), his former chambermaid, intervenes and the inaccuracy of the beloved wife reveals to him. Destroyed, Duchesne decides disparaitre and to start again its life. It is made pass for a gangster near the doubtful relations of Suzanne then, undertaking to carry out a break-in, is made engage as maitre of hotel in an industrial rich person…
Jean-Paul Chanois was one of the French scenario writers of the post-war periods most disputed by criticisms of the New Wave, which considered its cinema poor and empesé.
Today, its films are let view with more indulgence, even a some nostalgia of a cinema which did not have an other claim to only divert. All the interest of this comedy of 1964, adapted of a part of Claude Gével by George Derrick and Claude Sautet, and dialogued by the impossible to circumvent Pascal Garden, lies in interpretation. Indeed, even those which the thick-skinned play of Jean Gabin leaves of marble, will be able only to enjoy the appearances of Mireille Darc, Philippe Noiret or Liselotte Pulver, inter alia.
